The former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) has launched a scathing attack on ex-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), blaming him for the ongoing upheaval in the House leadership.
What Happened: Cheney accused McCarthy of being the catalyst for the current disorder in the House leadership, as reported by The Hill on Sunday. She underscored his endorsement of members who sought to overturn the results of the 2020 election and his indifference toward the events of January 6.
Cheney highlighted how McCarthy’s choices, especially those following the 2020 election and the January 6 incidents, have undermined democracy. She criticized his backing of certain members, whom she identified as “white supremacists” and “anti-Semitic.”
She also drew attention to the escalation in threats of violence towards Republicans in the midst of the leadership turmoil, attributing these threats to the propagation of misinformation by ex-President Trump about his 2020 election win.
Cheney, ousted from her GOP leadership role in 2021 for opposing Trump’s unfounded election claims, noted that such actions were enabled and supported by McCarthy.
Why It Matters: This accusation comes on the heels of Jim Jordan’s (R-OH) failed attempt to secure the Speaker’s position, which has thrown the House Republicans into a state of uncertainty about their next steps.
