Will Kevin McCarthy Return To Speakership Amid Israel Crisis?

In the midst of the Israel crisis, the past Speaker, Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), has left the door ajar for a possible return to his former position.

What Happened: According to Politico, McCarthy refrained from endorsing a successor and left the decision up to the House Republican Conference. During a Capitol Hill press briefing, he shared his concerns about the House’s operational efficiency in the absence of a speaker, particularly amid the Israel conflict.

He declined to predict his response if re-nominated for the speakership this week. He emphasized the challenges tied to appointing a speaker who might be replaced within 81 days, terming it as the “wrong” signal to send during such a crisis.

Despite the ambiguity, McCarthy’s return to the speakership is highly unlikely. Representatives Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) have already secured endorsements for the role, and McCarthy’s critics are strongly against his return.

In light of the Israel crisis, McCarthy introduced a five-point strategy to address the situation, which includes plans to rescue U.S. hostages held by Hamas, supply Israel with more weapons, confront Iran and anti-Semitism, and tackle domestic U.S. national security issues.

Why It Matters: McCarthy’s potential return to the speakership comes after his historic ousting from the position. The House of Representatives voted him out following his inability to calm a rebellion within the Republican Party’s conservative wing.

McCarthy’s return would face strong opposition, particularly from his critics who voted for his removal. Meanwhile, the possibility of Jordan, a Trump ally, becoming the next GOP House Speaker is gaining momentum.

Jordan has expressed confidence in his chances, citing support from various political figures, including conservative hardliners, moderates, and former President Donald Trump. His potential election could significantly reshape the House’s leadership dynamics.
