Trump Says Upon Inauguration He Will Move 'Thousands Of Troops' Stationed Overseas To The US-Mexico Border

Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, has announced that if he is reelected in the 2024 presidential race, he will shift resources from federal law enforcement to station a significant military presence at the US-Mexico border.

What Happened: According to a report by Reuters, Trump, who is a contender in the next presidential elections, made this declaration during a campaign rally in Dubuque, Iowa. He expressed his intention to dismantle the existing border policies of the Biden administration, characterizing the border crossings during his successor’s term as an “invasion”.

He said at the rally that upon his inauguration he would move swiftly to end Biden’s so-called open borders policy.

“I’ll make clear that we must use any and all resources needed to stop the invasion, including moving thousands of troops currently stationed overseas.”

Trump also hinted at reviving the travel ban from his previous term that prohibited entry from a number of countries with a majority Muslim population. The legality of such actions, however, remains a matter of debate.

The Biden administration has stood by its border policies, calling upon Congress to enact laws to amend a flawed system. Critics, however, argue that the border issue is being exploited as a political instrument by Trump and fellow Republican candidates to win over their electorate.

Notably, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, another presidential contender and a key competitor of Trump, pledged last week to station the military at the border and use force against drug cartels if he wins the election.

Why It Matters: These declarations come in the backdrop of previous remarks made by DeSantis in August, where he suggested employing drone strikes against Mexican drug cartels.

Later in September, he did not discard the possibility of using missiles against these drug cartels. Trump’s recent announcement seems to follow a similar line of thought, indicating a growing trend among Republican candidates to use forceful measures in dealing with border issues and drug trafficking.
