Hyundai, Lexus And Genesis 2023 EV Models Win Top Crash Safety Award From IIHS

Three new electric vehicles (EVs) have been awarded the prestigious Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ award. The recipients are the 2023 models of the Hyundai HYMTF Ioniq 6, Lexus TOYOF RZ and Genesis Electrified GV70, Electrek reported.

The vehicles successfully passed all six of the IIHS' crash tests and were rated “advanced” or “superior” for their front crash avoidance systems.

Additionally, pedestrian safety has become increasingly critical with the recent surge in pedestrian deaths. The “plus” rating also entails meeting extra requirements for headlight quality, which must be standard across all trims.

The GV70 gained “advanced” ratings in both daylight and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention evaluations, while the Ioniq 6 and Lexus RZ earned “superior” ratings in these tests.

While the IIHS and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) share similar objectives, they employ different testing methods. The IIHS views its work as complementary to the NHTSA’s, enhancing the government agency's five-star rating system with more crash testing information.

None of these three vehicles have been rated by the NHTSA yet.
