Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.’s SSNLF entry-level smartphone, the Galaxy A14, was the sole non-iPhone smartphone in the top five, but its $130 price tag has more to do with its popularity than anything else.

Expanding the list to the top ten most shipped smartphones in this period, there are five iPhones with their shipments totaling 86.4 million, compared to last year's 83.2 million shipments. Apple managed to increase its shipments despite concerns of a global economic slowdown.

Overall, the top ten smartphone shipments fell in the first half of 2023 to 133.3 million units from 141.4 million units in the same period last year.

Two Out Of Three Phones Shipped Were iPhones

Apple accounted for most of the shipments in both years, but its performance in 2023 improved drastically even as overall shipments declined.

Apple's share in the top ten smartphone shipments increased to nearly 65% in the first half of 2023 from 59% in the same period last year. It also increased its tally in terms of number of iPhones on the list, which went up to five from four in the top ten.

Interestingly, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 11 remained fan favorites in both periods – iPhone 13 shipments remained strong at 15.5 million units while iPhone 11 shipments stood at 6.9 million units during the first six months of 2023.

Sales of Apple's more expensive ‘Pro' models also increased substantially – Apple shipped 47.5 million units of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro in the first half of 2023. For comparison, the iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro shipments stood at 37.8 million units during the same period last year.

With the iPhone 15 launch expected to make Apple the world's top smartphone maker for the first time, the Tim Cook-led company seems adamant about defying economic slowdown concerns.
