Elon Musk Gives A Tour Of His Desk At Tesla HQ, Reveals Where He Sits At Work

Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday spoke about his desk, or lack of it, at the company headquarters in Texas.

What Happened: Previously, Musk said, he would move his desk around the factory to wherever the biggest problem was. However, now, he doesn’t have a desk, the CEO said.

“These days, I don't have a desk, but the room I use for meetings at HQ overlooks the Model Y end of line,” Musk wrote. He was responding to a fan on X.com who shared an old video of Musk showing his desk in the middle of the factory.

“While most CEOs sit in ivory towers, @elonmusk put his desk in the middle of the factory,” the fan wrote.

The 51-second-long video posted by the user shows Musk in conversation with a person and showing his desk in the middle of the factory.

"I think its important for a leader to be at the front lines," Musk says in the video. “I want the opposite of being up in an ivory tower. I want to be in the middle of the battle and that means being in the middle of the factory,” he said while showing a relatively unremarkable desk with his sun glasses, coffee and an award.

Why It Matters: The billionaire has often come off as a hands-on leader, with anecdotes of him sleeping at his desk after long hours of work shared around in the past.

However, Musk, in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, said employees who believe working from the office is old-fashioned should "pretend to work somewhere else."

In an email to employees last year, he had asked them to either clock a minimum of forty hours per week or leave Tesla if they wish to work remotely.
