We Learned It In Elementary School, But This Entrepreneur Makes $2M A Year Teaching It On TikTok

Zinger Key Points
  • A viral video on TikTok jumpstarted Kat Norton's career teaching Microsoft Excel.
  • "In October 2021, I crossed a major milestone: I made $100,000 in sales — in just one day," Norton says.

A young entrepreneur who calls herself "Miss Excel" quit her job in 2021 to pursue a multimillion-dollar side hustle teaching computer skills online. Now she makes $2 million a year and works only a few hours each day.

Miss Excel: A viral video on TikTok jumpstarted Kat Norton's career teaching Microsoft Corp MSFT Excel. At the time, she was living at home with her parents and she was up to her neck in student debt.

She started selling a Microsoft Excel course on her website after the TikTok video led her to gain 100,000 followers on the platform. Within months, her passive income from the side hustle surpassed her earnings as a full-time management consultant, according to CNBC.

"I quit my job in January 2021 to become a full-time entrepreneur, and created nine more courses that teach different career skills. And in October 2021, I crossed a major milestone: I made $100,000 in sales — in just one day," Norton said.

A New Life: The TikTok-fueled startup changed Norton's entire life. She gets to live at her own pace, which starts with a prioritization of personal wellness in the mornings. She meditates and enjoys breakfast with her boyfriend before planning her day.

Norton also has her own personal trainer that comes to her house to guide her through various exercise routines. She has plenty of time to do things she loves because her new job only requires between three and four hours of work daily.

She doesn't even begin working on the business until around noon, she said. Her daily workload includes things like creative activities, business strategization, filming content, editing social media posts and hosting training sessions.

"I make sure to schedule breaks in between tasks to reset myself. This helps me be more efficient and work only 15 to 20 hours per week," Norton said.

Her boyfriend quit his corporate sales job last year and came on to help manage finances for the Excel startup. Miss Excel currently generates more than $2 million a year, which has allowed Norton to buy her dream home, take several vacations each year, and support family and friends financially.
