Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Pinterest Founder Sign Open Letter To Pause Trials Of AI 'More Powerful' Than GPT-4

Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak are among the 1000+ signatories who have signed an “open letter” calling for a pause on training systems exceeding OpenAI’s GPT-4

What Happened: An open letter issued by the non-profit Future of Life Institute has been signed by 1125 (at the time of writing) people, including Musk, Wozniak, Jaan Tallinn (co-founder of Skype), Evan Sharp (co-founder of Pinterest) and several other artificial intelligence or AI experts.

The letter calls on “all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4” until safety protocols for such designs are created, executed and evaluated by independent experts.

“Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable,” the letter read, adding, “If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium.”

In the letter, concerns were expressed about the potential hazards of human-competitive AI systems in terms of causing economic and political upheavals to society and civilization.

It also highlighted a statement by chatGPT-parent stating that “that point is now” to get an independent review before “starting to train future systems.”

Why It’s Important: OpenAI’s chatGPT technology has long attracted awe and criticism from netizens and experts alike. The AI-powered chatbot has also ignited a debate about the future of AI and the risks associated with it

Musk previously slammed chatGPT parent over its Microsoft Corporation MSFT ties. He co-founded the company in 2018 and was reportedly turned down when he proposed to take over the company and run it himself.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has received immense attention for his views on AI. The tech icon compared the innovation of OpenAI’s chatGPT with the invention of the internet

Alphabet Inc. GOOG GOOGL also launched Bard, an AI language model for dialogue applications.
