Tesla Supplier Achieves Mass Production Of Battery That Outperforms EV Giant's In-House 4680 Cell By 13%: Report

Tesla Inc.'s TSLA battery supplier Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited, or CATL, has reportedly achieved mass production of Qilin batteries.

What Happened: CATL has achieved mass production of Qilin batteries, The Paper reported on Tuesday.

Delivery of Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd‘s Zeekr 009 MPV, the first vehicle to be powered by the Qilin battery, is expected to begin in the second quarter, the report added.

CATL launched the Qilin battery in June 2022, claiming a 13% higher energy density than Tesla’s 4680 cylindrical battery cells.

Earlier this month, Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly told CATL that he had mixed feelings about its status as the world's largest battery maker. Xi said he is glad for CATL's leading position, and also concerned for the risks involved.

CATL is the world's largest battery supplier dominating over 35% of the global battery market. The company supplies to several EV makers including Tesla, Nio Inc. NIO and Ford Motor Co. F.
