Axon To Offer Free Body Cams To Every Officer; Who's Their Chip Supplier?

Earlier this week, Taser International Inc AAXN announced it would offer a one-year free trial of all its existing body camera products, full software suite and training support to all police agencies in the United States.

There's Free Lunch

The company, formerly known as Taser and now going by the name Axon, said it would give out an Axon Body 2 Camera for each sworn officer, digital evidence storage with an Evidence.com "Unlimited Pro" license, two mounts per officer, docking station to securely upload body camera footage and access to the full Axon Academy online training library.

The Axon Body 2 camera was unveiled in October 2015 at a price of $399 with unlimited HD storage included in the Unlimited pricing tier for $79 per month. The company foresaw availability for trial and shipments in the fourth quarter of 2015.

Ambarella Connect

In a 2015 press release, Axon revealed Axon Body 2 used an Ambarella Inc AMBA HD camera System-On-Chip, or SoC.

"Ambarella is thrilled to partner with TASER to deliver this state-of-the-art on-officer video camera design," said Fermi Wang, CEO of Ambarella. "We look forward to partnering with TASER on future products."

When Benzinga contacted Ambarella following Axon's free trial offer, the company didn't respond to requests for comment.

Ambarella shares rose roughly 4.7 percent Wednesday, reacting to Taser's announcement of its free offer. However, over the course of the session, the stock trimmed its gains and ended up merely 1 percent.
