The city of San Diego hosted 130,000 attendees for its Comic-Con 2016 convention. While the event is typically a fan favorite for comic book and movie fanatics, investors can use the event to check in on the many movie studio and media companies that are publicly traded corporations.

1. Pokémon GO: Everyone Has To Catch 'Em All

Attendees at the Comic-Con were playing Nintendo Co., Ltd (ADR) (OTCMKTS: NTDOY)'s mobile hit game, Pokémon GO. In fact, the game was the "undeniable craze" of the event.

2. Return Of The 1990s

Nostalgia was in full effect at Comic-Con, including a sneak peek of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. (USA) (NYSE: LGF)'s "Power Rangers" movie.

3. 'Star Trek' Returns To TV

A new "Star Trek" TV series was confirmed and will debut in January on CBS Corporation (NYSE: CBS) and be titled "Star Trek: Discovery."

4. Virtual Reality A New Obsession

Virtual reality has become the "latest obsession" and all the big brands, including Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: FB) are teaming up fans to provide a "more immersive experience" with their favorite characters.

5. Major Studios Passed On Oliver Stone's Edward Snowden Flick

Oliver Stone said during Comic-Con that his newest flick, which depicts the life of Edward Snowden, was an idea that was actually turned down by every major movie studio.
