comScore Data Confirms Massive Box Office Opening For Disney's 'Zootopia'

"Zootopia" is casting its charm on the U.S. box office collection as a recent data from comScore shows it raked up $232.5 million globally, including $73.7 million – a record for best ever North American opening weekend for Disney animated feature film. This is a net positive for the shareholders of Walt Disney Co DIS.

"Walt Disney Animation Studios' 'Zootopia' enjoyed an impressive $137 million global weekend and with a best-ever North American debut for a Walt Disney Animation title at $73.7 million, the film now boasts a global total of $232.5 million," comScore's Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian said in a statement.

'Zootopia' is an American 3D computer-animated comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. It is the 55th Disney animated feature film. It was released on March 4, 2016 in the Disney Digital 3D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D formats.

Disney's earlier ventures "Big Hero 6" and "Good Dinosaur" opened domestically to $56 million and $39 million respectively. But, "Zootopia's" strong social momentum, combined with strong early critical reviews (100 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating) ensured a massive opening and subsequent strong global collections.

Shares of Disney were up 1 percent at $99.36. They have dropped about 6 percent this year.
