July Auto Sales Recap: General Motors And Ford Announce Multi-Year Record July Sales

On Friday major U.S. auto manufacturers release their July domestic sales metrics. Analysts at Morgan Stanley accurately predicted that June's auto sales momentum will remain strong and carry over in to May.

General Motors: Best July Since 2007

General Motors GM saw its sales improve across all segments in July.

The Detroit based manufacturer delivered 256,160 vehicles in the U.S. in July, marking the company's highest July sales since 2007. Retail sales rose four percent while commercial deliveries surged 69 percent and all other fleet deliveries saw a 21 percent improvement.

In a press release, Kurt McNeil, Vice President of Sales Operations stated that “sales of utility vehicle soared in July because American families feel better about the economy than they have in a long time.”

General Motors' most popular brand by total units sold was Chevrolet. The company delivered 175,155 Chevrolet branded autos in the month, an increase of 7.7 percent from a year ago. GMC sales rose 22.2 percent to 48,081 units; Buck sales rose 7.9 percent to 17,683. Cadillac was the lone unit that saw sales decline to 15,241 units, a 2.6 percent drop from a year ago.

General Motors ended July with 75 days supply at 798,532 units, compared to 72 days supply in June.

Ford: Best July In Eight Years

Ford F reported solid gains across all of its segments in July.

The Detroit based manufacturer delivered 212,236 vehicles in the U.S. in July, marking the company's highest July sales since 2006. Truck sales rose 17.4 percent to 78,583 units delivered while car sales declined 6.4 percent to 68,702 units.

Sales of Ford branded vehicles rose 9.4 percent from a year ago to 204,373 units while Lincoln branded vehicles saw its sales grow 13.6 percent to 7,863 units.

In a press release, John Felice, Ford's Vice President of U.S. marketing, sales and services stated that “July proved to be a very good month for Ford and Lincoln with positive gains across the board in all the major segments.”

Ford Fusion set an all-time monthly sales record with 23,942 cars sold, an increase of 16.7 percent from a year ago. Ford's highest selling pickup truck, the F-Series, saw sales increase 15.2 percent from a year ago to 60,394 units.

Volkswagen July unit sales declined 14.6 percent to 30,553.

Toyota TM July unit sales rose 11.6 percent to 215,802.

Nissan July unit sales rose 11.4 percent to 121,452.

Chrysler July unit sales rose 19.7 percent to 167,700.

Hyundai July unit sales rose 1.5 percent to 67,011.
