Rumor: Samsung Galaxy S5 Unveiling Set for Feb. 23, 2014

Tech blogger/analyst Eldar Murtazin said on Twitter TWTR recently that the long anticipated unveiling of Samsung SSNLF’s Galaxy S5 would likely take place in Barcelona at the World Mobile Congress on Feb. 23.

There’s nothing like specifics to set the rumor mill churning. Other rumors have suggested the S5 would be brought out on or near the World Mobile Congress. Murtazin linked it to a single day. And, the Russian blogger has a track record.

Murtazin predicted that the Samsung S4 would be revealed March 14, 2013. The phone was actually unveiled March 13, one day earlier. Since Feb. 23 is a Sunday, does that mean the S5 unveiling will take place Saturday, the 22nd?

Murtazin said in his tweet that the market launch of the S5 would be the “end of April.” He also indicated that the price for the device would be “the same” meaning similar to other previous Samsung models.

Adding that there would be a TouchWiz UI upgrade, the blogger said other specifications have already been disseminated, suggesting that most of the anticipated features were already known.

Among the most recent rumors concerning the Galaxy S5 are the inclusion of stylus functionality, a 2,900mAh battery, and head tracking gesture controls according to International Business Times.

Most recently, @evleaks tweeted pictures depicting what appeared to be a tiled interface similar to that of the Microsoft MSFT Windows Phone. Similarities to Google GOOG’s Now have also been pointed out.

Although previous rumors suggested the S5 would feature an iris scanner that idea has fallen by the wayside and has been replaced by rumors that the new Samsung flagship smartphone would have a fingerprint scanner designed to directly compete with the Apple AAPL iPhone 5S.

At the time of this writing, Jim Probasco had no position in any mentioned securities.
