Warner Bros. has already responded by canceling the Paris premiere of the film. Director Christopher Nolan and cast members Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, and Morgan Freeman, have
cancelled their press interviews
.
The cancellations came after a masked gunman walked into a theater in Aurora, Colorado and
opened fire
on a crowd of people during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. At least 12 people died in the assault, and around 50 people were shot. According to
The Hollywood Reporter
, European exhibitors are increasing their security. The NYPD is
doing the same
. Prior to last night's assault, The Dark Knight Rises was expected to have the second-biggest box office debut of all time
with an opening haul of $170 million
. It is not yet clear how moviegoers may react to the tragedy. Olivia Munn and other celebrities are using social media to
express their condolences
to the Colorado victims. But a quick search on Twitter did not reveal a great deal of indicative comments from its users. Most of the tweets are links to reviews, spoilers, and updates on the tragedy. Only a handful of users seem to be providing actual comments. "So after the tragic shooting at the Dark Knight Rises screening in Colorado, I'm starting to think illegal downloads aren't all that bad..." tweeted
