If consumers are willing to pay a premium to own Apple
AAPL
products, they
must
be willing to pay a premium for hotels.
That is the assumption Orbitz Worldwide
OWW
is making. The online travel company has announced that it will show more expensive hotel offers to Mac users. According to the
Wall Street Journal
, this decision stems from the company's internal research, which revealed that when booking hotels on Orbitz.com, Mac users spend $20 to $30 more per night than PC users. This is a significant increase considering the fact that the average nightly booking is somewhere around $100. That is just the beginning. The Wall Street Journal pointed to a recent study by Forrester Research and Shop.org, which found that users of tablets "tend to place bigger online orders than users of laptops or desktops." And by "tablets," the Wall Street Journal is referring to the iPad, which continues to
widen its lead
in tablet sales. Forrester also found that the average household income for adult owners of Mac computers is $98,560 versus $74,452 for PC owners. With an additional $24,000 in annual income to play with, Orbitz is hoping Mac owners will continue to spend more when they travel.
