Blackberry's Advantages

Chen was asked the advantages that BlackBerry has over competing softwares from firms like VMware, Inc. VMW. He replied, "BlackBerries have two advantages. One is the security and the privacy that's better than everybody else. And the second one is what we call the 'Blackberry Experience,' which you have a lot more features that has been road-tested for a very long time, which (our) enterprise IT department really likes. So, the combination of those two are usually what our winning ticket is."

Not Emotional About Phones

On when does he realistically foresees a handset from the company becoming a hit again, Chen said, "Well, we have a roadmap that we laid out. We like the phones that we are designing; we will make it a best college try. We believe we could do it, but the market will tell us. I am big on phones. I mean, I like it, but I am not emotional about it.

"I think, this is a business. We think we could make money on the phone. We have done a lot of things not only about the design, but everything we talk about with manufacturing, arrangements to components to everything included.

"We are looking, breaking down everything about the cost in the phone business and how to turn a profit and then grow on top of that. So, first step first; we have a couple of new phones coming out toward the end of this calendar year.

"We will see; we are bullish on it," Chen concluded.
