Apple Inc.
AAPL
has always priced its product at a premium and the trend continues with its Apple Watch. At $299, the watch might not be as expensive as some of the luxury watches, but for the average consumer it still is a considerable sum to spend on the watch. Benjamin Clymer, the founder & executive editor of Hodinkee, was on CNBC Friday to opine on whether price will be an important factor people will consider before buying the Apple Watch and whether Apple can have a monopoly over the smartwatch market. Will People Buy The Apple Watch Regardless Of The Price? "I think certainly, I think we have seen that overtime Apple fans are kind of more die-hard than most consumer electronic fans and on top of that if you consider what you are getting for $299 compared to mechanical watches and the digital watches in the same price segment, it's really leaps and bounds above their competitors," Clymer replied. Smartwatch Monopoly "I wouldn't say Apple has a monopoly because there are several other companies that have been making smart style watches, digital watches for years really," Clymer said. "But I will say they have a certainly a strong hold on many consumer electronics fans." "They own an entire kind of an environment, they own iTunes, they have got their computers, people love their phones. So, this will just be another kind of additional kind of a peripheral in that environment that is already so loved by millions of people." Hit Or Miss When asked whether Apple will have another success with the Watch, Clymer replied, "I think it will be a hit, I think it will be a hit in the sense that many people will buy it. I don't know how long or how long the usability will be. I think it's something that, for myself for example I will certainly buy it, I don't know how long I'll use it." "I think it will absolutely be a hit, there's no question about that at least in the early months and the early life-cycle of the product," he concluded.
