Warren Buffett-Backed BYD, DJI Join Forces to Showcase World's First Vehicle-Mounted Drone

Warren Buffett-backed Chinese EV maker BYD Co Ltd BYDDF BYDDY showcased the first vehicle-mounted drone at its headquarters in Shenzhen this week developed in collaboration with tech company DJI.

What Happened: The unmanned aircraft system is integrated into an automotive-grade drone bay and can take off and land with a click. The drone can effectively capture aerial footage on a road trip with its high-definition, high-frame, and low-latency image transmission.

Mounted on a Yangwang U8, it also features automatic battery swapping and charging management.

Why It Matters: At the Dream Day 2024 event held on Wednesday, BYD also revealed its plan to invest 5 billion yuan ($0.7 billion) into constructing the world’s first all-terrain professional test drive sites in cities across China in a bid to enable testing EVs on various terrains and convincing potential customers before the purchase.

BYD manufactures both plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and battery-electric vehicles (BEV). In the fourth quarter of 2023, the company took over rival EV maker Tesla as the world’s largest BEV seller.
