Timothy D. Cook has had quite a storied past to ad to an incredible resume of experience. After graduating from Duke's Fugua School of Business in 1988, he served as the chief operating officer (
COO
) of the computer reseller division of Intelligent Electronics and spent 12 years in IBM's personal computer business. When he was hired by Steve Jobs, he initially served as Senior VP to Worldwide Operations. Steve Jobs was proven right for choosing Mr. Cook to steer the ship in his absence in 2004 and 2009. He kept iPhone4 and iPad development on track. The Macintosh computer sales levels increased under him tenure; and Apple's overall financial performance increased on his watch while shared rallied under challenging financial conditions. There is no doubt that Timothy D Cook is capable of running Apple. David Yoffie, from Harvard Business School said it correctly when he stated, "The company could not thrive if Steve didn't have an extremely talented team around him." Apple was not all Steve Jobs. But the challenge for Mr. Cook will be great. There are some 'factors' that will be hard to replace that Steve brought to to the table. Some of Mr. Job's unique talents that steered the company so successfully where is creativity; extreme focus with design and function of his products; his personality and management style. Steve Jobs had a special way of inspiring products not yet thought up and one of the challenges Timothy will have is keeping that "breakthrough innovation going." These traits are irreplaceable. Knowing that, and as sharp as Mr. Cook is, I am sure he will not try and replace Steve Jobs. He will stay true to who he is as an individual. Steve was (as I have seen it written) a "borderline tyrannical persona" inside the company sometimes. I am sure he excited his employees who were very loyal to him because he was perhaps the greatest innovator of our time. Maybe he deserved that type of loyalty. But now father time has brought us a new era for Apple like he does for all things. Perhaps the perfectionist style and the demanding fear it could have mustered with it will now make room for something without harming the magic Apple has been able to produce through the years. Timothy's leadership style could go a long way to relieve any negatives a leader like Steve Jobs might have brought. That is not to belittle Mr. Jobs at all. With all of our good qualities, we all bring negatives also. Will the leadership style of Mr. Cook enhance the good qualities of Steve Jobs and bring even more to the table? This is the opportunity. Time Cook won't show the world that he is smarter than Steve Jobs, he won't even attempt to compare himself to Steve. He is capable to lead the company Steve built but he will be himself. He is an outstanding leader and now has the ability to help others unlock the creative sides they have. No one person is as smart as a collective group of creative people. How will Apple do if Mr. Cook can unlock the hidden genius that lies within the organization? If he can manage it and channel it, can we see things that will make Apple far more profitable than it is today?
