Ever heard of the restaurant chain Jersey Mike's Subs? If not, you should; it is actually the fastest growing brand in the United States.

Bloomberg, citing the trade publication Nation's Restaurant News, reported that Jersey Mike's Subs has more than 1,500 stores open or in development, which is more than double than the around 700 stores it held at the end of 2013.

Bloomberg also noted that the restaurant chain known for its subs also boosted its annual revenue to $675 million last year from $402 million in 2013.

So why have so few heard of the chain?

For starters, Bloomberg stated that the restaurant chain enjoys keeping a "low profile" in the media and hasn't began advertising on national TV until very recently. Another reason explaining its lack of visibility among the public has to do with the fact that fast-casual chains that serve pizza, chicken and sandwiches have only recently stolen market share away from the national and more recognizable chains.

In Jersey Mike's case, the chain could be eating away at Subway's market as its sales have fallen 3.5 percent. This may be due to the fact that Jersey Mike's prepares each sandwich with deli meat sliced to order and none of the prepackaged items national chains offer.

"The slicer is the quarterback of the store," Hoyt Jones, president of the company told Bloomberg. "It's a coveted position."
