Former President Donald Trump has clinched a victory in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries.

While several candidates who ran against Trump have endorsed the president, he is missing one key endorsement.

What Happened: Trump is the frontrunner to win the 2024 presidential election according to many election polls and betting odds from sportsbooks.

With rival candidates Ron DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy dropping out early in the primary race, Trump faced only Nikki Haley through Super Tuesday before her resignation from the race.

While Ramaswamy and DeSantis pledged their support to Trump after dropping out, the former president still hasn't secured the support of another key Republican figure.

Former Vice President Mike Pence, who served under Trump during his four years in the White House, recently said he has forgiven the former president for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, but is unable to endorse him.

Former Trump White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Matthews noted the uncommon nature of the situation.

"I know Mike Pence to be someone who is a man of faith, a good man who only wants what's best for this country. I think that it took a lot of courage for him to come out and say that he would not be endorsing Donald Trump," Matthews said during a recent appearance on "Inside with Jen Psaki" on MSNBC.

Matthews said that Pence knows that speaking out against Trump could end his career in Republican politics.

"Look, it's unprecedented, no Vice President has ever said that their own former boss is not fit to serve."

Matthews said she admires Pence for his comments and wishes more Republicans "would have a backbone like him."

Why It's Important: The former Trump press aide also commented on the former president's use of "blood bath" in a recent speech.

"Trump oftentimes speaks in these kinds of incoherent vague sentences so that allows people to draw to the conclusion that they want to fit their own narrative," Matthews said.

Matthews said that while the Trump campaign said it applied to the auto industry, she's not buying it.

"Why would he use a phrase like, ‘that's going to be the least of it,' immediately afterward? That alludes to something more."

Matthews said it's possible Trump was talking about the economy, but it's important to remember who was speaking.

"This is a man who helped incite a deadly insurrection on our nation's Capital. So when he's using terms like ‘blood bath,' it's really hard for me to give him the benefit of the doubt."
