Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) is not a fan of former President Donald Trump. So much so, that he believes nearly all other candidates, regardless of party, are better options than Trump in the upcoming election.
What To Know: According to a report from The Hill citing a recent interview with CBS's Norah O'Donnell, Romney favors almost all of the other presidential candidates over Trump and even over the current president.
"I’d be happy to support virtually any one of the Republicans ... I’d be happy to vote for a number of the Democrats too," Romney reportedly said.
"It would be an upgrade, in my opinion, from Donald Trump and perhaps also from Joe Biden."
Romney has been one of the biggest critics of Trump and the former president hasn't shied away from firing back at the Republican senator. When Romney announced in September that he would retire from the U.S. Senate, citing old age, Trump took a shot at Romney on the Truth Social platform.
"Mitt Romney, sometimes referred to as Pierre Delecto, will not be seeking a second term in the U.S. Senate, where he did not serve with distinction," Trump said, referencing Romney's fake X (then Twitter) account he was linked to in 2019.
Romney announced his retirement due to old age, which is a common criticism used against Biden, and sometimes Trump.
If there is a rerun of the 2020 election next year, it's possible Romney could end up endorsing Biden. Romney's biographer McKay Coppins noted last month he wouldn't be surprised if the Utah Republican took Biden's side late in the election.
Current polls show Trump well ahead in the Republican primary and the former president has even moved ahead of Biden in a hypothetical rematch in recent weeks.
In the latest Morning Consult poll, which Benzinga tracks weekly, Trump received 44% of the vote, ahead of Biden, who had just 41% of the support. In a poll of Independent voters, Trump received 37% of the vote and Biden received just 31%.
