The upcoming Star Wars game, Star Wars Eclipse, developed by NetEase Inc's NTES Quantic Dream SA, will feature a unique gameplay element where there is no "game over."
Regardless of the choices players make or which characters die, the game's storyline will continue to progress, Lisa Pendse, vice president of marketing for Quantic Dream, told IGN.
The game is set in the High Republic era, hundreds of years before iconic Star Wars characters such as Anakin Skywalker and Han Solo.
"One of the big focuses we've had when we announced Star Wars Eclipse was to make sure it was clear that this is actually an action-adventure game that has all of the elements that you would come to expect and want from a Quantic Dream title, which is intricately branching narratives, multiple playable characters," Pendse said.
"There's no game over. Anyone can die, anything can happen and the story sort of continues so that those signatures are still there. But what we've been doing is even more ramping up our expertise in the gameplay arena," Pendse added.
The absence of a traditional "game over" mechanic challenges the concept of what is considered canon in the Star Wars lore, adding excitement for players and fans alike.
The game, which was announced in 2021, remains in development. Although details about it have been scarce, Quantic Dream has assured fans that it's still in progress.
"Can I say it still exists? Because it exists," Pendse said at Tokyo Game Show 2023. "It's just not ready. It's simmering."
