Will AI Disrupt Video Games? Someone Just Built Original 'Pong' Game In Less Than 60 Seconds Using GPT-4

Zinger Key Points
  • A Twitter user reported that GPT-4 created a version of Pong in less than 60 seconds.
  • This proves the AI model created by OpenAI could change video game development as we know it.

OpenAI's latest AI model, GPT-4, has only been on the scene for a day, but it's already making waves among users who are quickly realizing the tool's capabilities.

In a stunning example of GPT-4's speed and efficiency, one user reported that the AI bot was able to create a functional version of the classic video game "Pong" from scratch in under a minute.

Pietro Schirano, design lead at financial service and technology company Brex, took to Twitter to share his experience with GPT-4: "I don’t care that it’s not AGI, GPT-4 is an incredible and transformative technology. I recreated the game of 'Pong' in under 60 seconds. It was my first try. Things will never be the same," he wrote.

The AI model immediately generated some basic HTML and JavaScript code, which produced a fully working version of "Pong," but without the scoreboard.

Moreover, Schirano shared GPT-4 versions of other classic games like "Breakout" and "Asteroids", while other users shared their experiences with AI-generated games, recreating versions of "Snake", and "Connect 4", among others.

AI Could Change Video Game Development As We Know It

AI has the potential to transform game development, making it faster, cheaper, and more efficient. With AI tools, developers can automate many of the more tedious and time-consuming aspects of game creation, such as coding and asset creation, freeing them up to focus on more creative and innovative tasks.

Furthermore, AI can facilitate more advanced game design, allowing developers to create more complex and engaging narratives, as well as explore new genres and game mechanics.

Nevertheless, this has also sparked debates about the originality of AI-generated content. A similar scenario occurred earlier this month when a ChatGPT user created an "original" puzzle game called "Sumplete" using the bot. However, Oregon-based Digital Trends discovered that multiple versions of the game already existed, raising concerns about the legitimacy of AI-generated content.

What is even more alarming is that it was possible for Digital Trends to get ChatGPT, which is backed by Microsoft Corp MSFT, to plagiarize its own code for "Sumplete" by simply requesting a game with the same name. These issues raise important questions about the limitations of AI-generated content and the potential legal ramifications for companies like OpenAI.

As AI technology continues to advance, the video game industry will need to grapple with the ethical and legal implications of using AI-generated content. While GPT-4's ability to quickly create games is impressive, it also highlights the need for guidelines and regulations to ensure the originality and authenticity of AI-generated content.
