Will Kamala Harris's Media Blitz, Including '60 Minutes' And 'Call Her Daddy,' Improve Her 2024 Election Prospects?

by Chris Katje Benzinga Staff Writer

Vice President Kamala Harris is ramping up media appearances with less than one month to go until the 2024 presidential election.

Here's a look at Harris's schedule for the week and how it could strengthen her visibility in the presidential race.

What Happened: One criticism of Harris since she became the Democratic Party's 2024 nominee is her lack of media interviews. Her appearance on "60 Minutes" Monday is one of several high-profile media spots during a busy week that could help dispel doubts.

"60 Minutes," a program by Paramount Global (NASDAQ:PARA) (NASDAQ:PARAA) unit CBS, will air a special election edition of the news program Monday, Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. ET. Harris took part in an interview for the episode while former President Donald Trump backed out or never agreed to appear on the program, depending on who you ask.

Harris has several other media appearances during the week, including:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 8, 11 a.m. ET: "The View" on ABC
  • Tuesday, Oct. 8, 1 p.m. ET: "The Howard Stern Show" on SiriusXM (NASDAQ:SIRI)
  • Tuesday, Oct. 8, 11:35 p.m. ET: "Late Show with Stephen Colbert" on CBS
  • Thursday, Oct. 10, 10 p.m. ET: Town Hall with TelevisaUnivision, which is 45% owned by Grupo Televisa (NYSE:TV)

Harris' running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is also increasing his media appearances, which included an appearance on "Fox News Sunday" over the weekend. Walz will also appear on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Monday and an unnamed pop culture podcast later this week, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Why It's Important: Several of the interviews were pre-taped, and others will be live, which could show that Harris is now ready to turn her attention to an all-out media blitz with one month until the 2024 election day.

With Trump opting out of another presidential debate against Harris, both candidates are left to make their case through speeches and media appearances.

Harris's appearance on "60 Minutes" Monday and Trump's refusal to be featured in the episode could show a difference in the media strategy of the candidates.

With both candidates targeting undecided Hispanic voters, the Town Hall on Thursday could be a key event for Harris. A town hall by the media outlet with Trump in Miami will air on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 10 p.m. ET.

Harris's appearance on "The Howard Stern Show" and a weekend appearance on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast could benefit SiriusXM, which is the home of both shows.

Known for often talking to guests about sex, the latest “Call Her Daddy” episode that featured Harris has drawn backlash as being too political and coming across as propaganda, as reported by the New York Post.

Fans of the popular podcast were also upset that Harris was not questioned more on controversial topics like illegal immigration and the Biden administration's response to Hurricane Helene.

While Harris has been leading Trump in most 2024 election polls, prediction market Polymarket shows users betting on Trump to win the election, with his odds now ahead of the current vice president.

Election betting odds and polls released next week could show the impact of Harris' media blitz.

Tuesday's appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" marks Harris' first since becoming the presidential nominee in August. CBS said this will be Harris' seventh appearance with Colbert on the show, with her first appearance on April 19, 2018 as a senator and the most recent appearance on March 15, 2023 as the vice president, as reported by Variety.
