Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and U.S. Vice President Joe Biden penned an open letter on Bloomberg View, arguing that the cure for cancer is "within reach."
"We believe that it's time for a full and complete national commitment to rid the world of this disease, because the truth is that ending cancer as we know it is finally within our grasp," the authors stated.
According to the authors, greater cooperation between the government and private sector is required moving forward. The authors added that while the government has "tremendous resources" at its disposal, the "best expertise" exists outside of the government and within private medical and research communities.
To that end, the authors introduced the Bloomberg-Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy in partnership with Johns Hopkins University. The institute has already received private grants of $125 million and will serve as "one of the most promising avenues of research today."
"With the cancer moonshot and public-private partnerships, we are not trying to make incremental change," the authors concluded. " We're looking to make quantum leaps. Our goal is to make a decade's worth of medical advances in the next five years."
