Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. WMT might still have a brick-and-mortar-based business strategy, but there is evidence that the company is diving into digital innovation. Earlier this month, the US Patent and Trademark Office published a patent application filed by Wal-Mart for a technological device that appears to have the capability to propel autonomous shopping carts.

The circular, sensory-ridden device, would allow carts to move around a Wal-Mart store without the help of customers. Linked to an app and centralized computer system, carts would navigate the store for the customers allowing them to easily find their items.

The growing online shopping industry is considered a competitor to Wal-Mart. If launched, this cart could serve as a marketing tool for the Arkansas-based corporation.
