'Ugly Shoes' Still Hot On Social Media

Several major fashion articles in recent weeks have highlighted the popularity of Deckers Outdoor Corp DECK’s Teva sandals and Crocs, Inc. CROX shoes.

“This doesn’t have to be just our dirty little secret: those in fashion are now styling the non-fashion shoe into their everyday looks,” Vogue’s Liana Satenstein wrote last month.

So far in 2016, organic Twitter mentions of Teva and Crocs are up 5 percent and 11 percent, respectively compared to last year.

The stocks of Crocs and Deckers seem to be reflecting that trend as well. Deckers is up 17.5 percent year-to-date, while Crocs is up 5.1 percent. With the summer outdoor season just getting into full swing, the ugly shoe trend could give both companies a bottom-line boost throughout the summer.

The ugly shoe isn’t the only 2016 fashion trend that may be turning the stomach of high-end fashion connoisseurs. Social media data also shows that the Hawaiian shirt has become one of this summer’s hot trends.
