The 2016 Benzinga Fintech Awards is the only event in fintech dedicated to recognizing innovation in financial services and capital markets. Ahead of the May 24th awards show and gala, we spoke with Jonathan Medved, CEO of equity crowdfunding platform OurCrowd.

How is OurCrowd making venture investing easier?

“The democratization story starts with the fact that venture capital has only attracted 2% of accredited investors in the US, (10 million households). The real underlying growth trend in this market is that there’s very little alpha left in public markets once these companies go public. All the valuation is going on in the private stage in these companies.

"The first part of what we’re changing is providing a more democratic access to a limited industry called VC and angel investing. We’re creating scale. We’re opening it up to broad numbers of people who don’t need to write multimillion dollar checks, who can get into this asset class for as little as $10,000.

How does OurCrowd work?

"We have a 100 companies on our platform. We’re doing almost a deal a week. We’re building tools and software. We’re busy developing apps and systems internally so we can reach a scale that no one has had before.

"2% of deals we look at get approved and go on the platform. Our biggest deal has been $15 million. That’s what makes us appealing to the traditional venture and institutional investors. It turns out if you want to get into these companies you have to invest alongside Andreessen and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT).

What differentiates OurCrowd in the crowdfunding space?

"In order to get investors excited about this opportunity, you’ve got to give them a trusted, well managed serious investing experience. The secret is our very unique, idiosyncratic if you will, model. That’s why 90% of our deals are done with major names like General Electric Company (NYSE: GE) and Honda Motor Company, Ltd. (NYSE: HMC).
