Twitter Inc TWTR’s announcement on Thursday that Dick Costolo would be stepping down as the company’s CEO on July 1 and Jack Dorsey would be taking his place on an interim basis has caught many by surprise.

Re/code’s Kara Swisher was on CNBC recently to discuss why this transition is "strange" and "unusual."

An Unusual Transition

"This transition is very strange on all the counts that he would leave," Swisher said. "It’s strange kind of transition to put someone in place instead, who won’t say whether he wants to be CEO or not. There’s not more information on who they were talking to and things like that. It seems to be an unusual way to transition and, I think, everyone I have talked to is shaking their heads around that one."

She continued, "So, it’s not clear, and again, he won’t answer, Jack (Dorsey) won’t answer the question. Other issue is – is he the right CEO for the company? Despite being the founder. He has been the CEO before. Now he is different than he was before.

"Are they looking for a media person or a technology person? There’s all those questions that aren’t answered."

Possible Acquisition

On the companies that would be interested in acquiring Twitter, Swisher said, "I think Apple is another company that would be looking at a company like Twitter. It solves a lot of problems for Google…in terms of social media, in terms of a mobile app and things like that that they have been moving into.

"Obviously, for Apple there’s all kinds of benefits. And then for Facebook, Facebook has wanted to buy this company before and they would have to be looking at it anyway," Swisher speculated.
