Piper Jaffray's Field Trip To Sharp Healthcare

Piper Jaffray has published a Health Care Services: Information Technology report with key takeaways which are as follows: "Sharp [Healthcare] is one of about a dozen hospitals that have both Cerner and Allscripts. Getting the two vendors to cooperate has been challenging at times. At the root of the problem is the two systems use different medication databases. Cerner uses Multum, while Allscripts uses Medispan, so the two drug databases don't integrate well. Interoperability is achieved by each system producing summary clinical reports. Allscripts produces CCDs, while Cerner employs mPages. Each summary document can be imported and/or accessed from the third party system. Sharp notes that Allscripts works and plays well with others, while Cerner's grade report needs some improvement in that area." Sharp Healthcare consists of seven hospitals, 2,000 beds, 15,000 employees, and 2600 physicians, with $2 billion in annual revenues. Piper Jaffray's focus stocks for this sector include: athenahealth, Inc. ATHN $30.20 Cerner Corporation CERN $78.49 Computer Programs & Systems, Inc. CPSI $42.07 Covance Inc.
