Apple released an update Wednesday to its Mac mini line of desktop computers which featured the introduction of Intel dual-core i5 processors, new graphics options and Thunderbolt I/O technology. The new Mac mini computers will ship with Apple's newest operating system, also released Wednesday, Mac OS X Lion.

Apple today updated the Mac mini with next generation Intel core processors, new discrete graphics, high-speed Thunderbolt I/O technology and Lion, the world's most advanced operating system. The new Mac mini delivers up to twice the processor and graphics performance of the previous generation in the same amazingly compact and efficient aluminum design. Starting at just $599 (US), the new Mac mini is available for order today and in stores tomorrow.

The new Mac minis are said by Apple to be twice as powerful as the previous models in both processing and graphics performance. The most notable hardware change may be the removal of an optical drive in the computer, instead Apple offers an add-on Superdrive for $79.

"Mac mini delivers the speed and expandability that makes it perfect for the desktop, living room or office," said Phil Schiller, Apple senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing. "With faster processors, more powerful graphics and Thunderbolt in an incredibly compact, aluminum design, the new Mac mini is more versatile than ever."

Mac mini will continue to ship in three models, a base model, upgradeable model and a Mac mini server model with Mac OS X Lion server. Mac mini will start at $599 for the base model, the server addition starts at $999. All Mac mini models are just 7.7-inches square and 1.4-inches thick.

All Mac mini models come with a 500GB hard drive and Intel dual-core i5 processors, beside the server mode. Mac minis purchased through the Apple online store can be configured with up to 8GB of memory, faster 7200 RPM hard drive and 256GB of flash memory.

Mac minis are available today in the Apple online store with shipping estimated at "within 24 hours." In addition customers can purchase the new Mac minis Thursday at Apple retail stores and Apple authorized resellers.
