<p>A Wyoming locomotive engineer is suing <strong>Union Pacific</strong> (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/unp#NYSE">UNP</a>) in federal court, alleging he was injured when an AI computer software system caused two locomotives on the train on which he was working to move at conflicting speeds. </p>

<p>Andrew Kirol was injured in May 2021 when the software gave "incorrect, inconsistent, contradictory and dangerous instructions" to the locomotives powering the train, according to a lawsuit filed April 18 in the District of Wyoming. </p>

<p>Kirol was required to use the software, known as the Leader system. The system's purpose was to learn how to control locomotives on trains "without input from the Locomotive Engineer" says the lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages.</p>

<p>"LEADER is not AI — it is a nearly 15-year-old technology that is part of Union Pacific's Energy Management System and is similar to cruise control on a car" according to a statement from Union Pacific. "LEADER does not ‘learn' and make decisions that apply across other locomotives, and the engineer can take control at any time. It uses the topography of land, as well as train length and weight to optimally apply power and speed to the train, saving fuel and decreasing Union Pacific's carbon footprint."</p>

<p>Union Pacific calls the system an "energy management system" that "automatically [controls] a locomotive's throttle and dynamic brake to reduce fuel usage, minimize GHG emissions and optimize train handling."</p>

<p>The train was hauling freight near Green River, Wyoming, through an area of hills and valleys. Kirol was in the lead locomotive. A middle locomotive was typically controlled remotely by the engineer, but all locomotives were controlled by AI on the day of the incident, according to the suit.</p>

<p>As the train climbed a hill, the system slowed the lead locomotive while at the same time causing the middle locomotive to speed up. This "resulted in the middle locomotive violently pushing the cars between it and the lead locomotive towards the head of the train and into the locomotive where the Plaintiff was situated" the suit states. "This caused a ‘rear ending' of the Plaintiff's locomotive with significant speed and force" by compressing the slack spaces between cars.</p>

<p>The conflicting speeds between the locomotives were "a circumstance which no competent Locomotive Engineer would have allowed to arise under the circumstances" the suit alleges. Kirol was "violently" tossed around the cab, injuring his lower back.</p>

<p>The lawsuit alleges that Union Pacific didn't warn Kirol of the possible hazards, didn't train him adequately on operating the Leader system and failed to inspect the locomotives.</p>

<p>Kirol, who was "a strong and able-bodied man" prior to his injuries, expects to have physical impairments in the future and physical pain "probably permanently" the lawsuit says.</p>

<p>Wall Street suffers a double blow in Thursday&#8217;s session, as softer-than-expected revenue forecasts from<strong> Meta Platforms Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) are being compounded by weaker-than-expected economic growth and higher inflationary pressures last quarter, raising fears of a stagflation phase <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/04/38434513/us-growth-slows-in-q1-yet-inflation-acceleration-signals-stagflation-the-worst-poss">for the U.S. economy.</a></p>
<p>The U.S. economy grew by a 1.6% annualized pace in Q1 2024, slowing down sharply from the 3.4% pace in the previous quarter and missing expectations of a growth rate of 2.5%. <p>With investors being fearful, it makes sense to look for stocks to buy before the next &ldquo;Great Reset.&rdquo; The Great Reset in 2020 was a project with the stated aim to facilitate rebuilding from the global COVID crisis in a way that prioritizes sustainable development. However, we have only seen the opposite happen so far, with even more crises in the past four years.</p>



<p>Of course, no one can deny many infrastructure, clean energy bills and subsidies that have helped prop up green energy and sustainability. But it is also true that the momentum has decreased due to inflation and war. In my opinion, the grand vision of the &ldquo;Great Reset&rdquo; seems to have lost its way amidst the chaos of recent times.</p>



<p>In fact, many people think that with interest rates at their peak and recent <a href="https://www.bea.gov/data/gdp/gross-domestic-product">GDP data showing sluggish growth,</a> we could enter into a new economic crisis soon. The debt level has been increasing rapidly as well, and we have historically seen <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=hgMc#">recessions strike</a> just as the Fed started to cut rates.</p>



<p>Personally, I do not expect a major recession soon, due to strong labor figures. However, if future reports come in much worse than expected, it might be a good idea to move some gains into the following stocks before the next &ldquo;Great Reset&rdquo; begins in 2024.<br><br>Here are the seven stocks to buy.</p>



<h2>Alimentation Couche-Tard (ANCTF)</h2>

The stock has been one of the most stable ones in the past decade. However, ANCTF stock has declined 13% since February. That&rsquo;s because the company <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/article/4682267-alimentation-couche-tard-waiting-for-better-entry-point">reported underperformance</a> in same-store sales and margins for merchandise and fuel.</p>



<p>Nonetheless, I think it is a good time to buy before it inevitably bounces back, as it has done in the past. Most retail companies have seen their stocks go down recently, and those are the same headwinds hitting this company as well.</p>

Alimentation Couche-Tard <a href="https://www.chemanalyst.com/NewsAndDeals/NewsDetails/totalenergies-acquisition-by-alimentation-couche-tard-officially-completed-24308#:~:text=TotalEnergies%20Acquisition%20by%20Alimentation%20Couche-Tard%20Officially%20Completed,-05-Jan-2024&amp;text=Alimentation%20Couche-Tard%20has%20successfully,deal%20announced%20in%20March%202023.">completed its acquisition of TotalEnergies</a> this year. Moreover, it is also an EV charging company with a rollout of charging sites across North America. The company has a car wash network as well, and this aggressive expansion into multiple industries makes Alimentation Couche-Tard one of the safest plays in the stock market right now.</p>



<p>It is one of the boring &ldquo;hold and compound&rdquo; stocks to buy with a modest 0.92% dividend yield and boring is exactly what we want during a downturn.</p>



<h2>Casey&rsquo;s General Stores (CASY)</h2>

It operates a chain of convenience stores in the Midwestern and Southern United States. The stock may look expensive right now, but it is simply the premium you pay for safety.</p>



<p>CASY has a long history, and has shrugged off recessions in the past. Take a look at its performance during and after the Great Recession, and you&rsquo;ll see why the market is willing to buy the stock at these prices.</p>

Its <a href="https://www.google.com/finance/quote/CASY:NASDAQ">fiscal 2024 Q3 revenue was $3.3 billion,</a> down slightly 0.1% year-over-year (YoY). EPS of $2.33 beat estimates by $0.19. Moreover, inside same-store sales grew 4.1%, driven by strength in prepared foods and beverages. Its fuel gallons sold were also flat versus a 5% decline in its region. For&nbsp;all of&nbsp;fiscal year 2024, the consensus EPS estimate is <a href="https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/caseys-general-stores-casy-q3-earnings-beat-estimates-0">$13 on revenue of $14.94 billion.</a> It is definitely one of the safest <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/consumer-discretionary/retail/">retail stocks</a> to buy!</p>



<h2>O&rsquo;Reilly Automotive (ORLY)</h2>

While most companies in this sector have struggled, ORLY stock has continued to compound.</p>



<p>As I have stated before, the civilian vehicle fleet in the U.S. has been aging rapidly, and the <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/738667/us-vehicles-projected-age/#:~:text=At%2012.5%20years%20old%2C%20the,modernization%20of%20the%20motor%20industry.">average car on the road</a> was around 12.5 years old in 2023. The problem is that many people do not have the money to replace their car when it runs into problems. In my view, this is throwing good money after bad. New cars often require more insurance costs, so it makes sense for people to just repair and drive what they already have. This is solid news for O&rsquo;Reilly Automotive.</p>

<p>The average price target, based on <a href="http://Tipranks.com/experts/bloggers/omor-ibne-ehsan">analyst estimates,</a> is $1,162.15, with a high forecast of $1,300.00 and a low forecast of $986.00. That doesn&rsquo;t point to stellar upside potential, but safety is what we are looking for, and this company provides a lot of it due to the aging vehicle fleet, which will end up acting as a tailwind even during a downturn.</p>



<h2>Union Pacific (UNP)</h2>

You can invest in <strong>BNSF Railway</strong> by investing in <strong>Berkshire Hathaway</strong> (NYSE:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/brk-a-stock-quote/"><strong>BRK-A</strong></a></span>, NYSE:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/brk-b-stock-quote/"><strong>BRK-B</strong></a></span>), but that won&rsquo;t give you nearly as much exposure to the railway industry.</p>



<p>The U.S. actually has the world&rsquo;s largest network but doesn&rsquo;t get the credit for it. That&rsquo;s because most of its railway is used for industrial purposes instead of passenger rail. However, this industrial rail network is a good place to invest in during rainy days. Onshoring trends along with massive infrastructure spending should reignite more growth here, and we have been seeing exactly that.</p>



<p>The company showed remarkable efficiency in lowering operating expenses in an inflationary environment, with the <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/union-pacific-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2023-results-302044130.html">operating ratio dropping to less than 61%.</a> Moreover, analysts expect stellar EPS expansion over the coming years, with <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/UNP/earnings/estimates">EPS expected to rise from $11 to $21</a> over the next five years.</p>

If you&rsquo;re looking for railway stocks to buy, you won&rsquo;t find many better than UNP.</p>



<h2>Murphy USA (MUSA)</h2>

The stock has been delivering stellar gains in the post-COVID era, and I think it still has lots of room to expand in the coming years and provide safety at the same time.</p>



<p>Murphy USA has delivered 374% in gains over the past five years. It is down 2.2% over the past week due to <a href="https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/murphy-usa-musa-lags-q1-230504180.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAJ7YstubgAf6uuq05judoTWx6qiLvq3tt9ItH9JE4dZXa7dCGMWDP1QGjfmeNT3yLTo7CWlMWmh2_KCyAHZJy9WNU4crDWDazM5T-BmJQbP0AE0uY-8__aV0ziW4cUzwRQcHD_TWJ1KzytxlJr0253vf9GI3pzF3XLT0dPT1KC1n">missing earnings estimates</a> like most retail companies recently. However, it has been rebounding fast.</p>



<p>We are not looking at stellar growth in either its top or bottom lines going forward, but I still think it can compound fast since you&rsquo;re paying 15 times forward earnings for a safe and proven business.</p>



<p>As I have said before, safe stocks also command a premium. The premium you are paying here is much lower than most stocks currently considered &ldquo;safe.&rdquo; Its <a href="https://www.gurufocus.com/term/zscore/MUSA">Altman-Z score of almost 8</a> lands it solidly in the safe category. The stock also has a 0.42% dividend yield and a <a href="https://www.gurufocus.com/term/bs-share/MUSA">3-year average share buyback ratio of 8.6%,</a> which is better than almost 99% of retail companies.</p>

While other COVID vaccine makers have been struggling post-COVID due to politics, vaccine sales cratering and companies no longer being able to sell huge amounts of vaccines to governments at triple-digit margins, AstraZeneca has gone the opposite way.</p>



<p>AZN stock has been on track. The stock did not see a massive increase in its price even when COVID-19 vaccines were given out en-masse and has not seen the share price decline either. Thus, AstraZeneca&rsquo;s stock keeping stable through COVID is solid proof that it can weather storms and not wobble.</p>

In Q1, <a href="https://www.google.com/finance/quote/AZN:NASDAQ">total revenue climbed 16.6%</a> YoY to $12.7 billion. That beat estimates by 7.3%. Moreover, it has a 1.91% dividend yield to sweeten the deal.</p>



<h2>The China Fund (CHN)</h2>

However, I think it offers a once-in-a-decade buying opportunity right now.</p>



<p>China has seen a lot of weakness in the past few years due to COVID and the CCP&rsquo;s crackdown on many tech companies. That does not mean China is a bad investment right now. In my view, the mistakes seem to have been realized. The Chinese government is now loosening its monetary policy and <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2024/02/06/investing/china-stocks-rally-government-stimulus/index.html">&ldquo;pumping&rdquo; money into stocks.</a></p>



<p>We have seen several Chinese stocks stage a comeback, along with the <strong>Hang Seng Index</strong> recovering meaningfully.</p>

<p>Analysts are increasingly bullish about Arista&rsquo;s potential to capitalize on surging cloud computing and AI infrastructure spending, highlighting strong growth in data center buildouts. In addition, the company has a favorable positioning within the back-end networking space. We should note that the overall data center capital expenditure is expected to surpass $1 trillion by 2027. Booming investments in AI infrastructure will drive this growth.</p>



<p>Arista&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.gartner.com/reviews/market/data-center-and-cloud-networking/compare/arista-center-vs-cisco">primary competitive advantage</a> lies in its technological know-how to develop faster and more reliable data flows that consume less energy. Its innovative software stack enhances Arista&rsquo;s reliability in developing large AI clusters. Hence, its network solutions command robust margins that generate significant free cash flow.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Year-to-date (YTD), ANET stock is up 17%.&nbsp;Given its robust growth narrative, shares are priced at a premium valuation of 40.7 times forward earnings and 14.7 times trailing sales. Meanwhile, analysts&rsquo; 12-month price target for ANET stock suggests <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/markets/stocks/anet">an upside potential of 11%</a> from current levels.</p>



<h2><strong>TJX Companies </strong>(TJX)</h2>

The company operates in apparel and home fashion with key brands like TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods.</p>



<p>The retailer is expected to announce the first quarter fiscal 2024 results on May 15. Before that, the <a href="https://investor.tjx.com/news-releases/news-release-details/tjx-companies-inc-reports-q4-and-full-year-fy24-results-q4-comp">fourth quarter fiscal 2023</a> results showed a 13% YOY increase in revenue to $16.4 billion. EPS surged 37% YOY to $1.22, driven by a 5% increase in comparable store sales and rising gross margin.</p>



<p>At present, the retail landscape is difficult for companies to navigate, partly due to the given uncertainty over interest rates. Yet, TJX&rsquo;s ability to attract deal-conscious shoppers across different income levels and its flexible business model gives the company a competitive edge. As consumers seek value amid sticky inflation, the retailer could continue gaining market share from department stores and full-price retailers.</p>



<p>Strong consumer spending and an improving macro outlook suggest a positive overview for the financial year 2025. Analysts expect TJX to beat its financial year 2025 guidance on comparable store sales growth and EPS fronts.</p>



<p>So far, in 2024, TJX stock is up just 1%. Meanwhile, shares are trading at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 23.6x and a trailing price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 2.1x. The company enjoys a duopoly <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/05/7-stocks-to-buy-before-the-next-great-reset-begins-in-2024/">with <strong>BNSF Railway</strong></a> over the U.S. West Coast ports, moving freight across 23 states and gateway cities in Canada and Mexico.</p>



<p>The railroad operator reported <a href="https://www.up.com/cs/groups/public/@uprr/@investor/documents/investordocuments/pdf_unp_1q24_er_slides.pdf" target="_blank">first quarter fiscal 2024</a> results in late April. Operating revenues remained flat at $6.03 billion due to economic headwinds, while EPS increased 1% YOY to $2.69, beating Wall Street&rsquo;s expectations. In addition, free cashflow more than doubled to $525 million, driven by pricing gains that helped to compensate for lower volume and declining fuel surcharge revenue.</p>



<p>Union Pacific&rsquo;s ability to maintain stable revenue and improve efficiency amid economic headwinds in part shows its effective cost management strategies. Despite the flat revenue growth, the group lowered operating expenses in an inflationary environment.</p>



<p>Management&rsquo;s optimistic outlook is based on expectations of stable domestic grain demand and growth potential in other segments. As a result, Union Pacific upgraded its profitability outlook.</p>



<p>Yet, so far in 2024, UNP stock is down 1%. Shares are trading at a forward P/E ratio of 21.2x and a trailing P/S ratio of 6.1x. Wall Street&rsquo;s average 12-month price target for UNP shares implies&nbsp;<a href="https://edition.cnn.com/markets/stocks/unp">an upside potential of 12%</a> from current levels.</p>
