Non-GAAP earnings came to $0.78, beating analysts' expectations of $0.71.
Microsoft returned $6.5 billion to investors in the quarter in a combination of buybacks and dividends.
Microsoft Office commercial products and cloud service revenue grew by 5 percent, while personal computer revenue dropped 5 percent.
Microsoft shares were up 4.3 percent at $54.25 in after-hours action.
