Warren Buffett Top Wealth Gainer, Elon Musk Top Wealth Loser In 2025: Here's How Much Billionaires Have Added, Lost

Strong gains for Berkshire stock in 2025 have Buffett as one of the few winners among the world's richest people in the first three months of the new year.

At the time of writing, Musk is listed with a wealth of $320 billion by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. This ranks Musk as the world's richest person and he remains significantly ahead of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who is second at $217 billion.

Musk has lost $113 billion in wealth in 2025, according to the wealth index. While Musk remains the world's richest person, his drop in wealth is higher than all but 10 people in the world with the 11th richest person currently listed with a wealth of $108 billion.

On the flip side, there is Buffett who has ranked in the top 10 richest people in the world for many years with steady gains.

The Berkshire Hathaway Chairman is the top gainer year-to-date in 2025 and one of only three billionaires in the top 15 to have added to their wealth this year.

The other two gainers are Mark Zuckerberg, who ranks third and is up $3.44 billion to $211 billion, and Bill Gates, who ranks seventh and is up $3.5 billion to $162 billion.

Why It's Important: In 2024, many billionaires added to their wealth with stock markets hitting all-time highs and private company valuations soaring.

Musk ended 2024 valued at $432 billion, up $203 billion for the full year.

Buffett ended 2024 valued at $142 billion, up $22.2 billion for the full year.

In 2025, many stocks are down, including the overall SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, which has lost 1.7% year-to-date.

Tesla stock is down 26.9% year-to-date in 2025 to $277.36 at the time of writing.

Compare that to Berkshire Hathaway stock, which is up 17.0% year-to-date in 2025 and is currently on pace to outperform both Tesla and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust.

While Buffett remains well behind Musk in wealth, currently worth half of the Tesla CEO, consistent gains and a strong performance by Berkshire Hathaway stock have helped the legendary investor continue to rank among the richest people in the world.
