'Slow Things Down' — Biden Tells Netanyahu To Think Response Through After Iran Missile Attack On Israel

In the wake of an Iranian missile attack, the Biden administration has praised Israel’s successful defense and urged caution in any retaliatory actions. The U.S. has reaffirmed its commitment to Israel’s defense, while also making it clear that it will not participate in any offensive Israeli response against Iran.

What Happened: The Biden administration, along with its allies and Israel, celebrated the successful defense against an unprecedented onslaught of over 300 Iranian missiles and armed drones. A senior administration official stated that the U.S. is prepared to defend Israel again if necessary, reported The Washington Post.

Despite this, the U.S. has stressed that it will not be involved in any offensive Israeli response against Iran. The goal, as stated by the senior official, is to de-escalate regional tensions and prevent the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza from escalating into a broader conflict.

The Iranian attack, which was launched from Iranian territory and by its proxies in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, followed two weeks of tension after Israel’s deadly airstrike on an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria on April 1. The possibility of a direct Iranian attack on Israel quickly became a primary concern for the administration, overshadowing concerns about the situation in Gaza.

President Joe Biden has been criticized from both sides of the political spectrum for his handling of the situation. In response to the direct Iranian threat, Biden instructed U.S. military officials to protect Israel to the “maximum extent possible.”

When the attack was imminent, Biden rushed back to the White House from his vacation home and spent much of the evening with senior national security aides in the Situation Room, watching and being briefed on Iranian launches and subsequent shootdowns in real time.

After the attack, Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and advised Israel to “slow things down and think through” how to respond. The U.S. has emphasized that it will not be part of any Israeli offensive attack against Iran and wants to avoid regional escalation.

Why It Matters: The Iranian attack was a response to an Israeli airstrike on an Iranian embassy complex in Syria last week.

Following the significant assault from Iran, Israel’s leadership is now considering an appropriate countermeasure. The decision-making process is being carried out by Israel’s specialized three-member war cabinet, which is responsible for formulating the nation’s strategic responses to serious threats.
