'Worst Foul' Decision In SEC Game Leaves Fans, Analysts Baffled: Craziest Call In Sport This Week

A dubious foul in last Friday night’s SEC Tournament game between Alabama Crimson Tide and Florida Gators probably didn’t affect the outcome of the game, but it left spectators questioning the quality of refereeing by college basketball officials.

“This is the worst foul call I’ve ever seen,” said sports analyst Warren Sharp, in a posting on X.

Writing in The Spun column on the Sports Illustrated website, Chris Rosvoglou, said: “It appears the officials for the SEC Tournament need to get their eyes examined.”

Crimson Tide forward Grant Nelson was guarding Gators guard Walter Clayton Jr. on the perimeter. Nelson instinctively put his arm forward, but there’s no contact and Clayton lost his footing and fell.

Reactions On Court And Social Media

Nelson was bemused, while his coach, Nate Oats, was outraged, clearly questioning the official’s questionable decision.

Commentators at the match said: “Clayton Jr. just falls on his own, yet Nelson gets whistled for a foul.

“Not the right call on that one.”

One response on X suggests that such decisions should be open to review: “Calls like those should be reviewable and overturned. That's embarrassing.”

Paul P noted on X that the nearby official wasn’t watching the play, only focusing on the offensive player: “He just reacted to the offensive player fall over… and I thought the Big 12 had some bad refs.”

Andy simply said: “College basketball is the worst officiated sport in America.”

Alabama ended up losing the game, the Crimson Tide’s next game will be on Friday — the team’s first game in the NCAA March Madness tournament, and they will be hoping to put last week’s disappointment against Florida behind them.
