Former OpenAI Exec Says AI Could Be Humanity's Last Invention, And The Key To Exploring Other Worlds

According to Zack Kass, the former executive of OpenAI, AI could be the last technology humans ever invent and that it will lead to a future of exceptional progress and fulfillment.

What Happened: Kass, who was part of OpenAI’s initial team and led its Go-to-Market division, is optimistic about the future of AI. In an interview with Business Insider, he explained that despite the potential downsides, AI could significantly improve human life and solve global issues.

“I have not met an industry insider who I respected who didn’t acknowledge the fact that this could be the last technology humans ever invent and that, from here on out, AI just propels us at an exceptional rate and we live more and more fulfilling, joyful lives with less suffering and you know, we explore other worlds and galaxies, etc,” Kass said.

He also addressed the potential risks of AI, including idiocracy, identity displacement, the alignment problem, and bad actors. Kass believes that the most significant risk is the alignment problem, which questions whether AI can be trained to align with human interests. He is confident that this issue can and will be solved, given the widespread interest in addressing it.

When discussing the potential obstacles to building Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), Kass highlighted a compute deficit, an energy deficit, and over-regulation or bad policy. He emphasized the importance of effective policy in managing the potential negative impacts of AI.

Why It Matters: Kass’s perspective on the future of AI aligns with OpenAI’s recent efforts to promote responsible AI use. The company recently introduced a suite of initiatives to combat the spread of AI-generated misinformation during crucial elections, marking a significant step in addressing the misuse of AI in the democratic process.
