Chinese EV Giant BYD Announces Carbon Emission Reduction Equivalent To 740 Million Trees

Chinese EV maker BYD Co Ltd BYDDY BYDDF on Thursday announced that it has offset a significant amount of carbon emissions, akin to 740.4 million trees, as of Nov. 11.

What Happened: “As of November 11, 2023, BYD has prevented 44,421,726 metric tons of carbon emissions, offsetting 740,362,106 trees worth of CO₂,” BYD wrote on X, formerly Twitter. The company further compared this accomplishment to over 117 million trips around the Earth in a commercial plane.

Why It Matters: BYD is the world’s largest EV seller. The automaker stopped manufacturing vehicles based on internal combustion engines in March 2022 and said it would focus on new energy vehicles, including battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

Until the end of October, the company had sold 2.4 million new energy vehicles from the start of the year compared to merely 1.4 million in the corresponding period last year. Battery-electric passenger vehicles accounted for a majority of the company’s sales in the timeframe.
