Senator Manchin Denounces Near-Fight In Senate, Compares Atmosphere To 'Third World Country'

In recent developments, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has publicly condemned a near-confrontation that transpired in the Senate earlier this week, likening the situation to a “Third World country.”

What HappenedThe Hill disclosed that Manchin criticized the near-altercation in the Senate. The incident, which involved Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) and Sean O'Brien, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, transpired during a hearing on Tuesday.

Commenting on the situation, Manchin said, "It looked like a Third World country or a Banana Republic, and that's not who we are,” according to the report.

As per the report, Mullin issued a challenge to O'Brien for a duel in response to public posts where O’Brien called him a “clown” and a “fraud.” The potentially volatile situation was neutralized by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), reminding Mullin of his senatorial duties and responsibilities.

Manchin voiced his concern that such conduct tarnishes the U.S.’s image, especially during a time when it is dealing with multiple international challenges. “We are the superpower of the world. People are looking to us for leadership,” said Manchin.

The senator, who recently declared his decision not to seek reelection, condemned the incidents and expressed worry about the adverse effects on the country’s standing.

Why It Matters: This incident follows a series of confrontations within the Senate. In a previous Senate committee hearing, Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) and Teamsters Union president Sean O'Brien nearly came to blows, with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) stepping in to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Earlier, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair criticized the Republican party’s internal disputes in Congress, referring to it as a "clown show." Jaime Harrison, the DNC Chair, raised concerns about the increasing tensions among the members.
