House Democrats Mock Speaker Mike Johnson For Fundraising Email Typo: 'I Refuse To Put People Over Politics'

A recent fundraising email from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has sparked controversy due to a perceived typo in the message.

What Happened: Johnson, in one of his first fundraising emails since becoming the Speaker, used the phrase: “I refuse to put people over politics.”

This apparent mix-up has caught the attention of House Democrats and their allies.

Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) responded with a veiled criticism on X, formerly Twitter, saying, “House Democrats will continue to put people over politics. Why is that an issue for our Republican colleagues?”

Gun control advocacy group Giffords, founded by former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.), also took a swipe at Johnson for his record on gun control legislation. "Mike Johnson says the quiet part out loud: ‘I refuse to put people over politics," the group said. "For politicians bought by gun lobbyists, the people are never top priority."

Why It Matters: Following his swearing-in as Speaker, Johnson had said, “We’re in the majority right now. We’ve gone through a little bit of character building, and you know what it’s produced: more strength, more perseverance, and a lot of hope.”

Democrats have launched a campaign against Johnson, criticizing his views on abortion and LGBTQ rights.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) described Johnson as an “anti-choice, anti-gay, anti-gun safety, pro-Trump extremist.”

He added, “He’s a MAGA extremist, he [just] has better manners.”
