Jim Cramer Says Tesla Cybertruck Is Not A Car Or Truck — Here's What He Thinks It Looks Like

Zinger Key Points
  • Elon Musk recently said he expects to produce about 200,000 Cybertrucks per year, which is down from guidance from two weeks earlier.
  • "Do not compare this to anything," Jim Cramer says.

Earlier this year, Jim Cramer called the Tesla Inc TSLA Cybertruck a toy for Elon Musk fans, the ugliest vehicle he's ever seen and even said it looked like it was built by Fred Flintstone.

Wednesday on CNBC's "Squawk On The Street," he compared it to the vehicle from "Back to the Future."

What Happened: During a recent conversation on the "The Joe Rogan Experience," Musk said he expects Tesla to produce 200,000 Cybertrucks per year, or "maybe a little more."

That estimate is down from the 250,000 bar he set just weeks earlier on Tesla's third-quarter earnings call and people are taking notice.

In a post on X, Tesla bear Gordon Johnson asked Musk if the new figure was a slip or an official guidance cut. Cramer also highlighted the new estimate as being a potential disappointment for the Street.

"That's a shortfall," Cramer said, noting that Wall Street estimates were closer to 250,000 based on recent comments.

Cramer has been critical of the Cybertruck for some time. Earlier this year, he called it "a toy for Elon Musk fanboys" and said it was the "ugliest truck" he's "ever seen." In a separate interview months later, he said it "looks a little bit like something that Fred Flintstone might have built in his spare time."

The problem for Cramer is that he doesn't see a huge market for it because it's not really a car or a truck, the CNBC host said.

"I just question ... is it really a truck? You know, the people who buy this stuff are like collectors. You know what this looks like to me? The DeLorean," Cramer said.

The DMC DeLorean is well known as it was used as the time machine in the "Back to the Future" films, but it didn't experience much success in terms of sales and was only produced from 1981 to 1983.

Cramer believes Tesla has created an entire new category of vehicles with the Cybertruck.

"You know, we've got cars and trucks and then we've got this ... It's very exciting, it's just that there are people on Wall Street that are looking for 250,000," he said.

Cramer acknowledged that he's actually pretty optimistic about the Cybertruck's potential. Right now, it's just hard to gauge, he said: "Do not compare this to anything."
