The Tesla Model Y has officially become the best-selling car in the world through the first 7 months of 2026, according to new data from Focus2Move, an auto industry research firm that tracks new vehicle sales across 162 countries. Model Y sales are up 19.6% year-over-year, pushing the electric SUV ahead of the Toyota Corolla, Ford F-Series, Toyota RAV4, and Honda CR-V, which round out the global top 5. It is the only vehicle in the top 4 to post growth this year. The Toyota Corolla is down 6.0% year-over-year, the Ford F-Series is down 9.5%, and the Toyota RAV4 has fallen 25.6%. In the SUV segment specifically, Model Y sales are up roughly 20% while RAV4 sales are down about 25%, giving the Model Y a lead of approximately 200,000 units over its closest SUV rival. The Model Y has been one of the best-selling vehicles on Earth for several years, powered by strong demand in the United States, China, and Europe, plus expanding production capacity out of Tesla's Giga Shanghai and Giga Berlin facilities. Toyota has traditionally dominated global auto sales with a mix of hybrid and gas-powered models, but the 2026 numbers suggest the Model Y has once again pulled ahead in the transition to electric vehicles. It is worth noting that Tesla does not publish model-specific sales, so global Model Y figures are third-party estimates, and different industry trackers occasionally reach different conclusions using slightly different methodologies. The steep RAV4 decline is also partially tied to a generation changeover that has temporarily reduced Toyota's inventory in early 2026, according to industry analysts.
