Apple Rival Honor's CEO, Who Thought iPhone 15 Lacked Innovation, Unveils Eye-Tracking Feature In Magic 6 Phone

In an intriguing update for smartphone enthusiasts, Honor’s latest smartphone, Magic 6, will include an innovative eye-tracking feature named Magic Capsule. Honor’s CEO, George Zhao, announced this during the 2023 Snapdragon Summit hosted by Qualcomm QCOM.

What Happened: As reported by The Verge, the Magic 6 will be equipped with the unique Magic Capsule technology, described as “eye-tracking based multimodal interaction.” Simply put, it will allow user interaction via eye movements.

A demonstration at the Qualcomm summit revealed the feature’s capability to open an app on the device simply by changing the direction of the user’s gaze.

However, the practicality and effectiveness of the eye-tracking feature have yet to be tested, raising questions about user privacy, given Honor’s state-backed status.

“The demo video is hardly a real-life representation, and it seems like a feature with the potential to introduce more frustration than it’s worth,” stated the report.

Alongside Magic Capsule, Magic 6 will also boast a virtual assistant enabled by Qualcomm’s on-device AI. The assistant can execute tasks like creating videos on the device based on user-defined parameters.

While Honor hasn’t given an exact date for when the Magic 6 phone will be available, Qualcomm says that devices with its latest flagship chipset will start arriving in the next few weeks.

Why It Matters: The introduction of the eye-tracking feature in Magic 6 seems to be a bold move by Honor, especially after its CEO’s recent criticism of Apple Inc.’s AAPL iPhone 15 series.

Last month, Zhao expressed disappointment with the new iPhone series, highlighting the absence of innovation in the phone’s physical design.

At the time, Zhao said that Apple used to be the top leader in the smartphone industry because of better performance and cameras, but now, the market is changing.

He stated that It’s not just about making things faster or better cameras – that’s considered innovation. It’s also about coming up with new ideas and being a leader in thinking differently.
