A recent study by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) revealed that iPhone users in the U.S. have been found to upgrade their devices less frequently than Android users.
As reported by Phone Arena, the U.S. smartphone market is evenly divided between Android and iOS users. According to another report by Counterpoint, in Q2 2023, Apple Inc. AAPL sold roughly the same number of iPhones as all Android vendors combined. However, CIRP reveals that in September, iOS sales accounted for only 39 percent of total sales.
CIRP suggests that usage patterns could explain why iPhones don’t outsell Android phones in the U.S. Their research shows that iPhone users tend to keep their phones for longer periods, leading to less frequent upgrades. Only 10% of iPhone owners surveyed upgraded to a new model within a year of their previous purchase, compared to 23% of Android users.
In addition, 61% of iOS users kept their previous model for over two years, while only 43% of Android users did the same. CIRP theorizes that the higher cost of iPhones, coupled with less frequent deals, might lead to fewer upgrades among iPhone users. Android phone makers also release multiple models throughout the year, providing more opportunities for upgrades.
Another unmentioned factor could be the superior support and performance capabilities of iPhones, which may reduce the need for users to upgrade frequently.
