How Much Is An Early Cybertruck Delivery Worth? Your Spot In Line Can Go For Thousands

Zinger Key Points
  • The Cybertruck was unveiled by Tesla in November 2019.
  • A long wait list for the electric pickup truck could be millions of units long, prompting some to sell their place in line.

Electric vehicle (EV) leader Tesla Inc TSLA unveiled the Cybertruck to the world in November 2019. After several delays, the pickup truck is set for deliveries later this year.

What Happened: Tesla reported over 250,000 reservations, via a $100 refundable deposit, within a week of the Cybertuck unveiling.

Fast-forward to today. Third party estimates show around two million reservations of the Cybertruck.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has cautioned on expectations for the Cybertruck being too high in 2023 with production ramp-up coming in 2024.

With huge reservation numbers and a long waiting list, some see an opportunity to make money.

A report from Teslarati highlights users who have reserved Cybertrucks listing their reservation, or place in line, on auction marketplace eBay Inc EBAY.

A search for “cybertruck reservation” yielded eight results on Tuesday morning with listing prices ranging from $1,000 to $8,000. One auction says it is a reservation made in November 2019. Another auction with a starting price of $3,700 has a bid.

A look at completed auctions shows a sale on Oct. 5 for $2,000.

Why It’s Important: The auction listings, which are for the place in line, and not the actual Cybertruck could show the huge demand for the vehicle and price people are willing to pay to skip the multiple year wait.

Teslarati notes that Tesla is likely able to figure out who had the reservations and cancel it if they are found to be selling it via auction. The news site did not hear back from Tesla on an inquiry.

A recent auction from the Peterson Automotive Museum saw an early VIN (vehicle identification number) Cybertruck sell for over $400,000.

Tesla is set to report third quarter financial results Wednesday Oct. 18 after market close and will likely provide an update on the Cybertruck.
