Kevin McCarthy Claps Back At Republicans Who Ousted Him: 'They Don't Get To Say They're Conservative'

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) slammed those within his party who contributed to his ouster, labeling them as “not conservatives.”

McCarthy was removed from his Speakership in a 216-210 vote led by eight members of his own party, including Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and House Democrats.

According to a report by The Hill, McCarthy stated, “They voted against the greatest cut in history that Congress has ever voted for. They voted against work requirements. They voted against border security. They don't get to say they're conservative because they're angry and they're chaotic. That's not the party I belong to.”

He also expressed regret for assisting some of these Republicans in their election campaigns, suggesting he should have chosen other candidates instead.

“A lot of ’em I helped get elected, so I probably should’ve picked somebody else,” McCarthy admitted.

Post-ouster, McCarthy announced he would not seek the Speaker’s office again, though he expressed pride in his service. “I may have lost a vote today, but I fought for what I believe in — and I believe in America. It has been an honor to serve,” he said.
