eBay Under Fire: Faces Legal Battle Over Alleged Environmental Regulation Violations

eBay Inc EBAY faces legal challenges as the U.S. government has pressed charges against the tech giant, alleging breaches of environmental regulations.

The charges primarily revolve around eBay's alleged role in facilitating the sale of products that violate environmental norms, Reuters reported.

eBay could face massive penalties that could escalate into billions of dollars.

For each infringement of the Clean Air Act, the penalty could rise to $5,580, as per the government's legal complaint lodged in a Brooklyn-based federal court.

The U.S. Department of Justice alleges that eBay has allowed its platform to be used to sell over 343,000 "defeat" devices.

These devices are meant to be incorporated into vehicles to bypass emissions checks, providing enhanced fuel efficiency and power. Furthermore, the platform allegedly sanctioned the sale of more than 23,000 unauthorized pesticides in clear violation of a directive issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2020.

Adding to the list of concerns, the San Jose-based tech firm is also suspected of endorsing the sale of over 5,600 paint and coating removers containing methylene chloride, which have been linked to severe health conditions, including brain and liver cancers.

"EBay has the power, the authority, and the resources to stop the sale of these illegal, harmful products on its website," the complaint said.

"It has chosen not to; instead, it has chosen to engage in these illegal transactions."

Reacting to the accusations, eBay said, "The Government's actions are entirely unprecedented, and eBay intends to vigorously defend itself."

Price Action: EBAY shares are trading lower by 0.05% at $42.87 in premarket on the last check Thursday.
