Electric vehicle giant Tesla Inc. TSLA is reportedly looking to scale jobs at its Gigafactory in Texas.
What Happened: The company led by Elon Musk is targeting a workforce of up to 60,000 in Austin as it gears up for an increased Cybertruck production, reported Austin Business Journal. The report cited Tesla’s director of manufacturing at Giga Texas, Jason Shawhan.
At the end of last year, Giga Texas employed over 12,000 workers. Since then, the workforce in the Austin area has gone up to over 20,000 and is poised to grow further, as indicated in the report.
Tesla has also initiated infrastructure development to facilitate this expansion, beginning with the construction of a bigger parking garage.
Why It Matters: The first Cybertruck rolled off the production line at Giga Texas in July.
At the company’s annual shareholder meeting earlier this year in May, Musk confirmed that the Cybertruck delivery event would be held later this year. He added that it would be the vehicle he drives on a day-to-day basis and that he expects to sell 250,000-500,000 units every year once production is fully ramped up.
As of today, Tesla’s career page shows a large number of job openings at Austin, including in the finance, construction and facilities, charging, supply chain, sales and customer support departments, among others.
